Excerpt from a letter to The Guardian: Our eight-year-old daughter has, unbeknown to us, managed to spend over £8,500 over 90 days on the Apple app store. We did not realise that our HSBC debit card had somehow been linked to her iPhone and had no idea that she could spend so easily. She was not aware that the money she was spending was real money. She has been sending money to YouTube channels and the YouTubers have then befriended her on Roblox in an attempt to make more money from our child. To me, this is financial grooming. HSBC did not once alert us to these suspicious transactions. Apple initially rejected our claim for a refund, then, on appeal, agreed to refund only two payments totalling £60 because they were unauthorised purchases by a minor, even though the others were made in the same circumstances. We are desperate.
If you permit your eight-year-old to have their own iPhone — a decision worth careful consideration for all parents (for communication with your child, we suggest an Apple Watch SE instead) — set up an Apple ID for them within your family group. Avoid letting your child create their own or use your account, which is tied to your bank card. This setup automatically activates Ask to Buy. With Ask to Buy, when kids want to make an eligible purchase – such as buying an app from the App Store or a TV show, movie or book from Apple Media Services – they send a request to the family organiser. The family organiser can use their own device to approve or decline the request. For example, if a child wants to buy an app, the family organiser can see the app and decide whether to allow it. If the family organiser approves the request and completes the purchase, the item downloads automatically to the child’s device. If the family organiser declines the request, no purchase or download will take place. If a child re-downloads a purchase, downloads a shared purchase, installs an update or uses a redemption code, the family organiser won’t receive a request.
