Today, a vast number of Google Maps users worldwide will spot a notable update when zooming into the waters south of the U.S. and east of Mexico. Google has changed the name of this body of water from “Gulf of Mexico” to “Gulf of America.” There has been no announcement regarding whether Apple, another key player in digital mapping, will make the change within Apple Maps. • In the U.S. – “Gulf of America” Google blogs, “The names you see in the Maps app are based on your country location, which is determined by information from your phone’s operating system (e.g., iOS and Android), including your SIM, network, and locale.
