Billionaire Ek will step away from daily operations as Spotify strategizes to compete with music services from Apple, YouTube, and Amazon. The company also announced Gustav Söderström, co-President and Chief Product and Technology Officer, and Alex Norström, co-President and Chief Business Officer, as its co-Chief Executive Officers. They will report to Daniel Ek and will also serve on the company’s Board of Directors subject to shareholder approval. Jaspreet Singh and Supantha Mukherjee for Reuters: ‎ Ek, a prominent tech entrepreneur of Europe, will focus on capital allocation and long-term strategy as executive chairman in what the company called a European-style role. “I will be more involved than a typical US chairman. So think of it a little bit like moving from a player to a coach,” said Ek, who has been on the company’s board since 2008. Founded in 2006, Stockholm-based Spotify helped transform a music industry that had been shrinking for years due to piracy and falling CD sales. Its U.S. debut in 2011 came as industry revenue had slumped. Still, the company reported its first annual profit only in 2024, after a slew of price increases and cost-cutting efforts. “The big unknown is why Spotify needs an executive chairman and two chief executives as that conjures up the idea that too many cooks spoil the broth,” said Dan Coatsworth, investment analyst at AJ Bell. ‎ MacDailyNews Take: Ek sees the writing on the wall. A musical adaptation of the Apple TV+ series will premiere at the Nederlander Theatre this spring, with previews beginning April 4th and opening night on April 20th. The production is slated to run through September 6th. Caitlin Huston for The Hollywood Reporter: ‎ The show follows New York doctors Josh and Melissa, who go backpacking to fix their relationship and find themselves in the mythical town of Schmigadoon, where the townspeople won’t stop singing in the style of Golden Age musicals. The Apple TV+ series premiered in 2021 and ran two seasons, with the first mirroring the plot of the musical and the second extending to the next era of Broadway musicals, including Cabaret and Sweeney Todd. While it became somewhat of a cult classic, the show was not renewed for a third season. In the TV series, the two leads were played by Keegan-Michael Key and Cecily Strong. “Schmigadoon is a love letter to the Golden Age of movie musicals,” said producer Lorne Michaels. “It’s a little bit nostalgic and a lot of fun. The same channel previously leaked the 14-inch MacBook Pro with an M4 chip before Apple’s official announcement last year, suggesting this is likely a credible leak. Joe Rossignol for MacRumors: ‎ Based on the box shown in the video, this appears to be a 13-inch iPad Pro with an M5 chip, 256GB of storage, and a Space Black finish. The new iPad Pro does not have any noticeable external design changes compared to the current models with the M4 chip, with features like a single rear camera and a Smart Connector still visible. Based on the Geekbench 6 benchmark result shown in the video, the M5 chip offers up to 12% faster multi-core CPU performance compared to the M4 chip in the iPad Pro. Like the M4 chip, the listing shows the M5 chip has a 9-core CPU with three performance cores and six efficiency cores.
