Reuters: ‎ Under a deal announced in June 2024, Apple has integrated ChatGPT into its operating system for iPhones, iPads and Macs. Musk owns both X and xAI, which owns the Grok chatbot. Apple and OpenAI have “locked up markets to maintain their monopolies and prevent innovators like X and xAI from competing,” the lawsuit filed by xAI in August claimed. “Apple and OpenAI’s agreement is expressly not exclusive, and it is public and widely known that Apple intends to partner with other generative AI chatbots,” lawyers for Apple said. In a separate filing, lawyers for OpenAI accused Musk of waging “a campaign of lawfare” against OpenAI and ChatGPT, referring to earlier suits that Musk, who is also the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has filed against the company. Reuters: ‎ The decision at least partially settles a question of whether and how Qualcomm would continue to work with Arm technology, following an acrimonious legal battle between the two last year, and the move is likely to raise revenue for Arm which charges more for the newer tech. San Diego, California-based Qualcomm last week introduced a new generation of PC and phone chips. Unlike previous generations, two sources familiar with the matter said Qualcomm’s new chips will use the ninth version of Arm’s computing architecture, called “v9” in the industry, which includes several improvements aimed at helping chips handle tasks from chatbots and image generators better. Qualcomm rivals such as MediaTek, which has at times eclipsed Qualcomm’s market share for mobile phone chips, has publicly confirmed its use of Arm’s v9, and most analysts believe Apple uses it, too. ‎ MacDailyNews Take: Apple’s chips consistently outperform Qualcomm’s (and everyone else’s) Arm-based processors, even as Qualcomm and others adopt Arm’s v9 architecture, because Apple secures priority access to TSMC’s most advanced manufacturing processes due to its status as the foundry’s largest and most lucrative customer. This gives Apple a significant edge in transistor density, power efficiency, and raw performance that Qualcomm et al. struggle to match on older or less optimized nodes. A previous technical capability notice (TCN) issued in January sought global access to encrypted user data. That move sparked a diplomatic clash between the UK and US governments and threatened to derail the two nations’ efforts to secure a trade agreement.  In February, Apple withdrew its most secure cloud storage service, iCloud Advanced Data Protection, from the UK. It said at the time: “As we have said many times before, we have never built a back door or master key to any of our products or services and we never will.” Privacy campaigners say that any attempt to force Apple to compromise the security of its systems could put at risk global customers’ private information, including passwords, message history and health data, which can all be stored in iCloud.  Caroline Wilson Palow, legal director of the campaign group Privacy International, said the new order might be “just as big a threat to worldwide security and privacy” as the old one. She said: “If Apple breaks end-to-end encryption for the UK, it breaks it for everyone.
