Apple has told suppliers to prepare for roughly 16 million MacBook Neo shipments in 2027, about double the nearly 8 million units expected for 2026, according to supply-chain sources cited by DigiTimes. The forecast covers the full calendar year and arrives as the company prepares a second-generation model for the first half of 2027. The original MacBook Neo, Apple’s lowest-priced laptop to date, launched on March 11, 2026, after being announced on March 4th. It starts (after a mid-year increase driven by global memory shortages) at $699 in the U.S., down from an initial $599, or lower for education buyers. The machine uses the A18 Pro chip previously found in the iPhone 16 Pro, paired with 8GB of unified memory, a 13-inch Liquid Retina display, and a fanless aluminum design available in Silver, Blush, Citrus, and Indigo. Storage options begin at 256GB, with a 512GB configuration that adds Touch ID. Demand wildly exceeded early expectations. Apple described the launch week as its strongest ever for first-time Mac buyers, and the company later increased production orders to keep pace. Education deals, including a large deployment by the Philippines Department of Education (172,654 MacBook Neo units; 169,008 units for public school teachers, 3,646 units for administrative officers), have further supported volume. Supply constraints on the A18 Pro also appeared as sales ramped, contributing to tighter availability at times. The 2027 target of 16 million units represents a substantial step-up even after accounting for the fact that the first model was available for only about ten months in 2026. Part of the increase is expected to come from a full year of sales plus the arrival of a refreshed MacBook Neo 2. Bloomberg News’ Mark Gurman has reported that the second-generation model is planned for the first half of 2027 and is expected to move to an A19 Pro chip, raise base memory to 12GB, and add new color options while retaining a similar overall design and positioning. The projection underscores the Neo’s role in expanding Apple’s Mac business into more price-sensitive segments amid broader PC market pressures from elevated memory and storage costs linked to AI data-center demand. While component availability and pricing remain variables, the supplier forecast signals Apple’s confidence that the entry-level MacBook will continue to drive meaningful volume growth into 2027. MacDailyNews Take: As our own SteveJack wrote back in April: The MacBook Neo is nothing less than Apple’s most important Mac since the first iMac.
