Qualcomm announced Thursday that it has renewed its global patent license agreement with Apple, with the extension taking effect April 1, 2027. The deal continues a licensing relationship that has been in place since the companies settled a high-profile legal dispute in 2019. That settlement ended a two-year worldwide battle over wireless-patent royalties and modem-chip supply. As part of the 2019 truce, Apple made an undisclosed payment to Qualcomm, both sides dropped litigation, and they signed a six-year global patent licensing agreement starting April 1, 2019. The original pact included an option for Apple to extend the license by two years. “We are pleased to extend the Apple license agreement,” said John Han, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Qualcomm Technology Licensing, in a statement. Neither company provided additional details on financial terms or the precise length of the renewed agreement. Reuters reported that Qualcomm described the move as an extension of its licensing agreement for chips with Apple. The announcement comes as both companies continue to navigate the evolving smartphone and connectivity market. Qualcomm’s licensing business remains a significant part of its operations, covering a large patent portfolio used across mobile devices and related technologies. Apple has long been one of the world’s largest smartphone makers and a major customer for wireless technologies covered by such licenses. The 2019 settlement had marked a turning point after years of public conflict, including courtroom battles in the United States and other jurisdictions.
