Indie developer Vidit Bhargava has built the most charming iPhone Duo demo yet: a virtual Walkman that treats Apple’s first foldable like a cassette deck. Open the Duo to pick a tape and “insert” it. Close the Duo and playback starts. Bhargava recorded the button clicks and tape hiss from a real Walkman and brought the hardware to the Bitrig Hacks event in San Francisco this weekend, where Duo-Man took second place.
“Duo-Man offers the complete walkman experience on the iPhone Duo. Open the Duo to pick and ‘insert’ the cassette, Close the Duo to start listening,” Bhargava posted with the demo. “Yes, I actually recorded the button clicks and static noise from a real Walkman!” The concept maps cleanly onto the hardware. The 7.6-inch inner Super Retina XDR display becomes the tape door and album picker. The 5.4-inch outer display becomes the Walkman face with chunky transport controls. Closing the hinge is the play button. Bitrig co-founder Kyle Macomber noted that Bhargava had to explain what a Walkman was to a chunk of the room. Bhargava is turning the hack into a real app. Planned features include Apple Music and local files, Apple Pencil “rolling” of the cassette loop, and fast-forward/rewind that behaves like the original mechanism. Spotify may come later. The video has already passed 1.9 million views. iPhone Duo specs Apple announced iPhone Duo on September 9.
