Apple releases third AirPods beta firmware, unlocking iOS 27 features

Apple continues its steady push toward the iOS 27 ecosystem with the release of a new developer beta firmware for its AirPods lineup. Build 9A5314b is now rolling out to developers, bringing compatibility for several major audio and interface enhancements coming in the fall.

What’s New in This Beta Firmware?

This marks the third beta iteration of firmware version 9.0 (following earlier builds like 9A5292e and 9A5304b). It prepares the following models for iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS Golden Gate features:

• AirPods Pro 2 (including USB-C version)
• AirPods Pro 3
• AirPods 4 (standard and ANC models)
• AirPods Max 2

Key additions enabled by this firmware include:

• Custom EQ Support: Finally, users can tweak Lows, Mids, and Highs directly in the Settings app. This long-requested feature lets you personalize sound beyond Apple’s preset profiles — a big win for audiophiles and anyone frustrated with the stock tuning.

• Adaptive Mode Slider: Easier real-time control over noise control modes.

• Redesigned AirPods Settings Interface: A cleaner, more organized menu with better grouping and labels, making it easier to navigate all the features Apple has stacked on over the years.

• Enhanced Siri AI Compatibility: Seamless integration with Apple’s next-generation Siri intelligence.

Additional rumored or previously announced tie-ins (like GymKit syncing for AirPods Pro 3) may also see refinements here.

How to Install the Beta Firmware

Ensure your iPhone, iPad, or Mac is running iOS 26 / iPadOS 26 / macOS 26 (or later betas).
Connect your AirPods and open the dedicated AirPods settings page.
Scroll down and toggle AirPods Beta Updates on.
Place the AirPods in their charging case near your device (and ideally on a charger). The update happens automatically in the background — it can take minutes to hours.

Note: This is developer-only for now. A public beta may follow soon, but there’s no forced update button — patience (and charging) is required.
