Apple has achieved a commanding lead in the global smartphone market for the first quarter of 2026, with the entire iPhone 17 lineup occupying the top three spots among the world’s best-selling smartphones. According to Counterpoint Research’s Smartphone 360 Global Handset Model Sales Tracker, the iPhone 17 claimed the No. 1 position with a 6% share of total global sell-through. It was followed by Cupertino’s flagship iPhone 17 Pro Max in second place and the iPhone 17 Pro in third. The strong performance underscores Apple’s continued dominance at the premium end of the market even as overall industry shipments face headwinds.
The top 10 best-selling smartphone models accounted for a record 25% of the global market in the March quarter — the highest concentration ever recorded for a Q1 period. Analysts expect this consolidation trend to persist through 2026 as manufacturers focus on fewer, higher-priority models amid a contracting overall market. The standard iPhone 17 posted particularly impressive year-over-year growth, achieving double-digit gains in key regions including the United States and China. The model delivered triple the sales volume in South Korea compared to the prior year, highlighting Apple’s strengthening momentum across diverse markets. On the Android side, Samsung’s budget-minded Galaxy A series demonstrated remarkable breadth, securing five positions within the global top 10. “Premium models continue to drive market concentration as consumers gravitate toward devices that offer strong long-term value and ecosystem integration,” the Counterpoint report noted. The rankings are based on sell-through data, which reflects actual consumer purchases rather than shipments to channels. Full quarterly model-level sales data and specifications are available in Counterpoint Research’s Smartphone 360 – Global Handset Model Sales Tracker, which covers 99% of the worldwide handset market.
