Apple’s “iPhone 17 Air” is expected to feature a slimmer design with a large 6.6-inch display. However, it may come with notable downsides, including reduced battery life and a single rear camera, at a time when phones typically boast longer-lasting batteries and multiple lenses.

It will also be sandwiched, pricing-wise, between two phones that are far superior in terms of specifications and day-to-day use. I expect the Air model to be substantially more expensive than the entry-level iPhone 17 (with more battery life and cameras) and only a couple hundred dollars cheaper than an iPhone 17 Pro (far superior in terms of performance, cameras and display technology).
So, yet again, [as with the original MacBook Air] consumers will be offered a device that has thinness as its main selling point. Such an idea might have been intriguing in 2008, when laptops could be bulky and inelegant. But it may be less of an asset with modern smartphone users.
Battery capacity and camera technology are the two big drivers of upgrades. And, unlike the MacBook and MacBook Pro 17 years ago, the regular and Pro versions of the iPhone aren’t especially unwieldy. Samsung Electronics Co. already has proof of this reality. It launched a 17 Air lookalike this past May called the S25 Edge and sales have been underwhelming.
