Historically, gaming has been a significant driver of App Store revenue, with estimates ranging from 62% in 2021 to 69% in 2020. For context, in the first half of 2020, the App Store generated $22.2 billion from gaming apps, representing a major portion of its total revenue. The dominance of gaming is driven by in-app purchases, with a small fraction of users (less than 10%) estimated to generate about 70% of gaming revenue.
