Apple preps dramatic overhauls to iOS, iPadOS, and MacOS this year

Apple is said to be set to undertake comprehensive software redesigns for iOS 19, iPadOS 19, and macOS 16, marking one of the most significant updates to its iPhone, iPad, and Mac operating systems ever. These updates will reportedly extend far beyond mere cosmetic changes, fundamentally transforming how users engage with their devices for years ahead. The overhaul will encompass both the visual interface—its appearance—and the functional experience—its operation—representing a daring step for a company with over 2 billion active devices worldwide.

Despite the risks involved in major interface changes, top Apple executives say they are confident that users will love the new look and feel. The trick is creating something that appeals both to the hundreds of millions of current users and the new customers that Apple hopes to add in the coming years.
While iOS has steadily seen improvements and additions over the past two decades, it’s undeniable that the current look adheres to what Steve Jobs introduced all the way back in 2007. Then there’s the issue of Apple’s different operating systems not having a similar feel… The new interfaces will adopt the design principles introduced in visionOS, the software for Apple’s Vision Pro headset. That includes greater transparency and new types of windows and buttons — and that should make all Apple devices feel more consistent and familiar.
What looks new is what sells, especially in the case of Apple, and these dramatic changes could end up being the most exciting takeaway from the company’s Worldwide Developers Conference in June. They could also serve as a timely distraction: Apple is in the midst of an AI crisis, and a new look will absolutely push attention away from that reality.
