In September, the Academy announced a new policy to better encourage women in schools to join the ranks of professionals who share their goals. They will join with other institutions that have already embraced this and will work toward better hiring practices, more efficient training, and more efficient support systems (this may include mentoring a mentor or coaching a graduate student).
This policy is just one more step in a broader effort to foster gender-specific leadership roles within science. It would go some way towards addressing the challenge of how many degrees we give women; it will also expand the role that women have played in advancing the field of applied mathematics through programs aimed at advancing the careers of women in STEM.
The goal of this policy is to give women the equal opportunity to work for all types of positions, including positions that don't require a college degree. It also seeks to encourage and support women to pursue and lead their communities of interest.
